Irondequoit American Legion Post  #134

Heroes preserving our way of life

Memorial Day Parade

The Last of the WWI heroes to eternal rest has gone...The number of surviving WWII heroes diminishes year after year...Veterans organizations membership is dwindling...Many towns are phasing out our patriotic events, however, Irondequoit is still known as a parade town. Hence to renew our commitment to preserve Memorial Day Observance, one of the most sacred events, we should unite.

For the past 85 years, with the co-operation of the Town of Irondequoit, Post 134 has been responsible for and cosponsored the annual Memorial Day Parade. We are asking for your help to maintain the ideal of this event and let it be known that it is a day when we remember and honor the memory of those who gave their lives in the service of our country, and those that had the good fortune to survive the wars but have since gone to their eternal rest.

We are hoping that the many Veterans Organizations, Military Units, Firefighters, and Law-Enforcement Units will be able to participate with their colors, color guard, and honor guard...We also hope for the participation of the many other community groups, youth organizations and State, County and Town Officials. If you would be interested in supporting the parade by registering a float or staff from your organization to march in the parade, Post 134 would greatly appreciate this support as well. Our goal is to not only have the parade continue but also grow in support, both in the parade and on the sidelines.

The Irondequoit American Legion Post 134 was established in 1928 and was founded on five main pillars: Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation, National Security & Foreign Relations, Americanism, Children & Youth and Community Service. Based on those pillars The Post 134 has supported and sponsored many organizations, events and programs such as: Canandaigua Veterans Hospital picnics, Christmas parties and Christmas purchasing Fund, South avenue Veterans Outreach Center, Honor Flight of Rochester, Scholarships for Children of Veterans, The Irondequoit Community Cupboard, The Irondequoit D.A.R.E. Program, The Boy Scouts of America, Mercy Flight Central, and The Ronald McDonald House Charities. We observe, participate, cosponsor Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, and Veterans Day. We donate U.S. and MIA Flags flown at the Irondequoit Town Hall, The Community Center, The Irondequoit Cemetery and at Camp Eastman.

As of 2011 Post 134 has lost some of it's financial support and will have to assume the cost of the Memorial Day Parade with the exception of Police overtime, reviewing stand rental and sound. This means that we will be covering all the entertainment, contracted marching bands, labor to set up and break down the reviewing stand and coordination of the line up.

Post 134 is looking for sponsors and donations. Your financial support will help us maintain a befitting event without affecting other programs that benefit the Veterans, children, youth, and our Community. The American Legion Post 134 is a 501(c)(19) not for profit Veterans Organization. Your donation is tax deductible.

Please find it in your heart to support an event deserving great respect and send any possible donation payable to:
